Many years ago a family scheduled an appointment to come to our shop and purchase an outfit for their daughter to begin showing horses. They arrived on time and began their search for just the right pieces. After awhile, all of their questions were answered and they had made their final decision. At some point the husband had realized the cost of their purchases was going to be quite a bit higher than he had imagined. They began talking and eventually came to sort of a stand still. Then turned to me as if I could settle the situation.

So I began to tell my tale, and to this day, I still stick to it! Children are born with a love of horses. Not all of them, but its either in them or it isn't. If it is, they will draw horses, read about horses, talk about horses and hang with people who do all that I just mentioned. If you have such a person in your family and they want to show, you will realize at some point that it is an expensive hobby.

However, there is a strange thing that happens in other situations as well. They think they are showing horses, which they are, but you will discover that while they think they are showing horses, other things are happening. They are learning the meaning of responsibility, the value of money, how to read maps or use a GPS, how to follow directions, how to win and how to lose gracefully, how to have real fun, how to make friends and what it means to be a part of a group and how great it is to have another pier group to turn to when school friends just don't cut it. There are many more as well.

So rather than focus on the money, set your sights on the "hidden" qualities and enjoy the ride with them. You won't be sorry.
